Fracture - Lower - Distal Femur
This section includes fractures of femur involving the distal femoral metaphysis, articular fractures of distal femur. Most orthopedic surgeons accept that the most common method of treatment is reduction and surgical stabilization.
Most supra-condylar fractures result from severe valgus, varus and rotational forces. High energy trauma is usually involved. Associated soft tissue or bone injuries should be carefully evaluated. These include ipsilateral femoral neck fractures, tibial plateau fractures and soft tissue injuries such as medial collateral ligament or lateral collateral ligament injuries. Popliteal artery is at risk when associated with dislocation of the knee.
OTA classification is the one used most commonly.
Three general types are described.
Type A; Extra articular
Type B; Uni-condylar
Type C; Complete articular
Each group is sub divided into three groups.
