Special types of fractures involving the base of middle phalanx deserves special attention and treatment. These include dorsal base fractures which may result in Boutonniere deformity, central slip injury, volar base fracture resulting in sagital  subluxation of the joint and most serious of them so called pilon fractures involving the PIP joint.
