There is extensive body of literature discussing the biomechanics of various fixation methods. These studies have shown that inter-fragmentary lag screw are very effective in fixing these fractures, plates usually act as tension bands so should be placed dorsally in Metacarpal fractures.

Multiple fractures, open fractures irreducible fractures and displaced intra articular fractures usually need ORIF.
